Celebrate Children's Day this weekend at the Esplanade with various free and ticketed performances.

My pick of some of the free performances:

by Kranji Primary School
Date: 7 - 9 Oct 2011, Fri - Sun
Time: 2:30 – 3pm, 4:30 – 5pm

This shadow puppet performance, Light of the Legend, is the result of many workshops held with Kranji Primary School. Combining shadow puppetry and dramatic storytelling, students learn how to bring their creations to life in a performance. Visual artist Jeremy Hiah as well as drama practitioner Peggy Ferroa facilitates the workshops. The students of Kranji Primary school will be performing Light of the Legend in the Jendela as part of Octoburst!

Ruffling their feathers in a delightful performance of the ruan, an ancient Chinese plucked string instrument, the Swan Ensemble presents music from Walt Disney! Watch this young and experimental ensemble play as they revitalise this traditional instrument through fun and modern interpretations of songs from our favourite cartoons.

Origamelan!

Hear the lost stories of magical animals and people through the Sundanese gamelan! The BronzeAge Gamelan ensemble is here to tell stories from around Asia while sharing the ancient art form of origami, or paper folding. Learn to make your own little origami animals, flowers or boats, or have a go at the bronze instrument. This unique combination of props and storytelling add to the magic of traditional music. Be a part of the stories and enjoy lively folksongs and hypnotic classical pieces in Origamelan!
