Dreams and Reality: Masterpieces of Painting, Drawing and Photography from the Musée d’Orsay, Paris

There are not many pictures taken in the exhibition in this post cos we think the artworks should be admired by your eyes and not thru' the lens.

One of the highlights of the exhibition -
Starry Night Over Rhone River by Vincent van Gogh.
This is also my Mummy as well as my favourite painting in this exhibition.

Besides this,
Dreams & Reality by Musee d'Orsay Paris @ National Museum Singapore

originally uploaded By Artitute Art
there were over 140 art pieces (paintings, photographs and drawings) from the collection of the world renowned art museum in France, Musée d’Orsay.

but according to my Mummy's artist-curator friend, half of the works shown are very weak works which are usually kept in the storeroom n not exhibited at Orsay and she commented that it's quite ridiculous that these works are shown in a black box here cos these painters were outdoor artists, which means that their works are meant to be seen under natural light, as the building of the orsay museum permits. So we don't see the real colours.

Anyway, 140 pieces of artwork is rather overwhelming and many children lose steam halfway.

Thanks to the oceanskies' Simple ideas to enjoy the exhibition “Dreams and Reality” better, we got ourselves audio guides which kept me interested in going on with the exhibition.

On top of using the audio guides, Mummy also tried to make me think more and observe more about some of the pieces.

Mummy: (looking at the size of the painting and the lady's dressing and in contrast to the paintinga of poor farmers) Hann, do u think this lady in the painting is a rich or poor person?

Hann: hmm... I don't know... (eyes still on the portrait) oh! Rich! Rich! Rich!

Mummy: Why?

Hann: Because she looks happy.

~Mummy thinks, "Oops! don't know is it a good or bad thing he thinks this way."

Besides the 5 tips by oceanskies, we have one more tip to help children enjoy the exhibition better.

Tip #6 Sit down and use these information boards at the side of the bench.
The fonts are bigger and easier to read than those tiny descriptions at the side of each painting.
Get your child to pick a board and match it to the correct painting on the wall.

new coach at Gym

we've got an additional coach (lady on the left) at gym today.
Mummy was worried that she's here to observe and take over Coach Yan eventually!
but Auntie Shirley told her that when there's a big class (7 of us), there's usually another coach to assist.

see us hopping on the balance beams.
(I'm right behind in white)
we "progress" from low beam, raised beam and finally the real thing!

I'm quite scared when on the balance beam.

but don't you think I'm more confident with Coach Yan?
That's why we love him.
He's really good with children.

that evening, I told my papa that there's a new coach today and that she doesn't know anything.
My parents were appalled that I said that.
My papa said even young kids like me know how to bully new teachers. haha.

oo... many have been asking where's the gym I go to.
*drum roll*

at Lor 7 Toa Payoh.

Bus 232 stops right at its doorstep.
It's the only bus at this bus stop.

It's a building on its own right next to Pei Chun Public School.

Funny how Mummy doesn't know this place when she's been staying in the neighbourhood for almost all her life.

Prime Gym takes in kids from 18 months old.

Dewlian

One day, I was reading my Chinese readers to Mummy,

and I said, "这是 dew莲。"

Mummy almost fell off her chair but had to keep her laughter to herself cos she's worried that I'll be discouraged from reading.

What did you learn

not hann but hann's mummy said...

Today after service when I picked Hann up from Sunday school, he asked me, "so what did you learn today?"

I was stumped.
cos I wasn't really paying attention to the sermon and was half distracted by people in the pews behind saying "so cuuuute!" at Jade and half dozing off.
=p

Terrible me.
but I'm not going to tell my son that I didn't pay attention to the sermon...
so I said, "What did YOU learn?"

and Hann started babbling about what he had learned while I secretly wish he will forget that that I have not answered his question.
then...
he stopped,
and asked again, "So, what did you learn today?"

dots...
oops!

Ok... to make up for it, I read the passage, Isaiah 6, again
and recalled pastor saying, "we often talk about God's blessings but seldom about God's judgment..."

So, what did I learn today?

Learnt that I must see with my eyes,
hear with my ears,
understand with my hearts,
and turn and be healed,

lest God harden my heart
and make my ears dull
and close my eyes.

while looking up for something on the net, found this
'Exhortation to Mothers' - By Ps Nina, FCBC
and reminded myself that

1. in God's perfect plan for evangelism, godly parents have the privilege to birth their children into God's eternal Kingdom; then disciple them accordingly.

2. Since you are responsible for your children's spiritual development, you should be reading and studying God's word, and praying so that they can receive the overflow of your time with God. Set aside time daily to fill yourself so that you can pour into your children and others.

Mummy: 所以咯。你也是我生的嘛。

我们可爱吧!

a few days later ...

Hann: Mummy, 为什么你生的就很cute?

Mummy: (loss for words. finally...) 我cute吗?

Hann: cute!

Mummy: 我cute, 所以我生的就很cute咯。

National Day Celebration in School

Friday 6 Aug 2010

Papa wanted me to stay at home this day cos he would not be able to pick me up in the evening.
but I was so looking forward to the National Day Party at school so Mummy decided that I should go to school.

~ Photo by Teacher Hui Leng ~

At the end of the day, Mummy asked if I enjoyed my National Day Celebration at School.

"It's not fun one," I sulked. "Very boring."
and I went on to describe what we did.

"Did you tell Teacher Sue Ann that it was boring?" Papa asked.

"No..." I answered.

"Why not? Why don't you tell her that it's boring and hope she'll make it more fun next year?" Papa suggested.

"If I tell her, she will be sad mah. Cause she made the games." I said.

My parents were impressed that I am so sensitive.

Family Fingers

This is one of the songs I learn in my Yamaha's Junior Music Course:

Friendly Fingers

Look at me, I'm holding up my thumb, finger number 1!
Always feeling really hungry,
Yum, yum, yum, yum, yum, yummy yum!

Here's the one that points at me and at you,
Finger number 2!
Always feeling cross and angry,
Ra, ra, ra, ra, ra, ra!

...

Now the baby, smallest of all, finger number 5!
Always crying really loudly,
waa, waa, waa, waa, waa, waa!

---

I told my parents that I am Finger No.1 cos I'm always hungry,
my papa and mummy are Finger No.2 cos they are always angry
and meimei is Finger No.5 cos she's the baby and always cry.

老师也是人 之 You know everything

Start my Yamaha Junior Course yesterday.
As Mummy's still in her confinement,
my Papa went with me (parents are required to attend the class together).

Since I was not
very willing to play on the keyboard during the period with Seimpi, Mummy decided to let me take things slower and hence chose Yamaha.
It's also recommended by a few music teachers and they said Yamaha trains aural skills very well which Mummy thought was important in music training.

I told Mummy the class was "quite interesting".

Anyway, I was having this conversation with Mummy about the class...

Mummy: The Parent have to learn too.

Hann: No. Parents know everything.

Mummy: No. parents dont' know everything. Papa doesn't know. He can learn with you.

Hann: You know everything.

Mummy: No. I don't.

Hann: but you are a teacher!

*italics, my own words.

conservative Hann

~ the largest of my 4 birthday cakes for my 4th birthday ~

During bedtime reading last night...

Son, "are you wearing sleevesless?"
Mummy (who is actually wearing low-cut spaghetti straps, more revealing than in the photo), "yes..."
Son, "Why are you wearing sleeveless?"
Mummy, "because it's so hot?"
Son, "I don't like you wearing sleeveless."

T for Tricycle

Photograph taken by me, Hann.
but Mummy cropped it.

Instead of forming words with these magnetic alphabets, I use them to make pictures.
This is a tricycle.
I made it with no help or prompts at all. My very own creation.
Nice?

Mummy was impressed that I used the word "attach" to describe the middle part of the tricycle.
I told her it's to "attach the wheels together".

I Can Read

I've been a very keen "reader" since young.
Problem is...
I can't read.

My parents have no time nor energy to train me besides during our daily bedtime reading.
They teach me sight-words.
Now I can read and spell "the, Thomas, go, up, he, zoo, moo, baby, cat,"
and read, "you, fish"
In the context of Thomas' stories, I can read "Percy, Gordon, The Fat Controller" and with some prompts, "Henry, Toby, James".

My school is rather slow in teaching phonics and reading.
Seeing that I love to read, and they are always tired from work and can't read more than one or two books a day, Mummy decided to send me to reading class so I can read on my own.

My 1st day at I Can Read!.
Before I go to the class, I was rather apprehensive as it's a drop-in class, I told my parents that I'd prefer to have them in the class with me.

At last, when I went there, I was quickly ushered into the classroom and soon forgot about Mummy. I was enthralled by the toys and classmates playing, I didn't even say goodbye to Mummy.
Mummy stuffed my jacket into my hands for fear that I might be cold before leaving.
She was surprised that I put on my jacket myself!

still worried about me, Mummy stood outside the door to observe.
She was glad I covered my mouth and nose when I sneezed and even took out tissue paper to clean myself up.

I've grown up, Mummy.
Don't worry!

After about 15 min of free-play (which mummy thinks it's too long), real lesson begins.
Teacher introduces me to the class.
pss... I'm the only boy there!
Think there are 5-6 other classmates who are all girls.

My parents waiting for me in the car.
Picture taken and stitched with papa's new Omnia II.

5 mins before class ends.
Wow. what a crowd.
Lotsa parents waiting for their kids.
Reckon "I Can Read" is really popular.
Can't say much about how effective it is at the moment though.

When I came out, I told Mummy that I had fun in class.
Papa asked what did Teacher teach and my reply was,
"Teacher didn't teach anything. She just tell us to colour."

Mummy fainted.
