Trade in for BPA-free bottles

Parents, if your child is still using bottles, it's time to change to your Bisphenol-A (BPA) leaching bottles (click for list) to BPA-free bottles.

Mums & Babes (United Square and AMK Hub) is offering a trade-in: You can purchase a BPA-free Medela milk bottle for $6.90 instead of the usual $10.90.
They are great for breastmilk storage too.

For those who doesn't know what is Bisphenol-A (or BPA)...
BPA belongs to a group of chemicals known as endocrine disruptors that mimic or block the actions of our natural hormones, especially oestrogen. ... Children, especially unborn and
newborn babies, are at the greatest risk from such chemicals because imbalances of hormones can have pronounced effects during their critical developmental stages, although many of which do not reveal themselves until much later in life.

Keeping Cool about Bisphenol-A

Hann's Mummy says:

Argh! In response to Anonymous' comment on Hann's previous post: It's difficult to chill about this! more so when an Anonymous ask you to chill.

oh man....

By God's grace, managed to sleep last night despite the bugging thought of the 50 Avent bottles with frozen ebm sitting in our fridge and that NUK bottles we have also, in high probability, contains BPA since it's labelled "7" on its recycle label.

This morning, woke up, looked at the Avent bottles with contempt and decided to we will replace them. only problem: with what.

then in my search for answers on the internet, found this blog post "Keeping Cool about Bisphenol-A" and Z-report on Safe Alternatives. Found some comfort in them and decided to share with those reading Hann's blog. Sorry if I caused any scare in Hann's previous post .

my decision: to replace all our avent bottles with Medela bottles, since I'm using Medela's pump, think might as well just use the bottles since they are BPA-free (gathered from various sources, including this one). but i'm not going to the extreme as to throw away all the frozen ebm but to slowly replace the bottles.

For storage, it's fine, but for feeding, we need another part- the cover which goes over the teat (circled in black in picture below). Think it's not available in Singapore.

Currently, we have one passed down from Meg. It came with her Medela MiniE Pump. Not sure if they still do. If you have this "cover" and has no use for it, pass to me, ok? Otherwise, I may have to buy from US again. Hann needs at least 2.

Updates (04 December 2007):

oo... Mummy found out where she can buy the bottles with these covers. You can find them at The First Few Years, Paragon and KKHospital.

Also found there, cheaper Medela "tubes" for storing and freezing breastmilk.

Avent bottles contains Bisphenol A

MUST READ!
and forward to all ya friends who have children using bottles or are pregnant.

February 27, 2007. Fox 11
"SAN FRANCISCO -- ...

The independent laboratory study ...

The group tested five popular baby bottle brands -- Avent, Dr. Brown's, Evenflo, Gerber and Playtex -- all five of which leached bisphenol A at levels "found to cause harm in numerous laboratory animal studies," Gibson said."

boohoohoo... now mummy is super worried because I've been using Avent bottles, and we have like more than 50 avent bottles used to freeze my milk. Wonder does this have anything to do with my slowed down growth rate since I started going to infant care and use bottles.

Mummy knew about this chemical (BPA) but trusted Avent cos they said, "suitable for freezing breastmilk".

so now how? this is terrible.

see video at http://www.bisphenolafree.org/

look also at http://www.thegreenguide.com/reports/product.mhtml?id=44&sec=3
they list Avent baby bottles as those to Avoid. *Mummy faints*

how siah?

at this point, Mummy wants to send all the avent bottles for recycling. but it's like >50 bottles we talking about here. and the $$... oh man. to think Mummy trusted them and recommanded them to many people.

another question is: if we're not using Avent, what other brand can we use?
Mummy tried to check the packaging for Avent and NUK bottles (both we have at home) but they don't say what they use to make these bottles!
so how are we going to know if the bottles contain Bisphenol A (BPA) or not?!
we don't want to buy another 50 bottles to discover that they also contains BPA.

here's a pharmacy having a trade-in drive for BPA-free bottles:

oh God, please tell Mummy what to do.
